Abstract

The Postwar Novel constitutes a literary corpus whose characters present an autobiographical experience related to the Civil War. This paper specifically focuses on female writers from the 1950s, amongst whom Ana María Matute (1925-2014) stands out, and analyzes the influence they receive from Elena Fortún (1886-1952), the author of the quintessential children's character, Celia. This character achieves great success during the years prior to the war. Fortún is presented, therefore, as a bridge between two generations of female writers. The influence of Celia is observed even in Uninhabited Paradise (2008), Matute’s last novel, published during her lifetime. The psychological characterization of the child protagonist, Adriana, reveals several points in common with Celia, amongst which several stand out, such as the maladjustment to school, the childish logic that she uses to understand the words of adults and the spaces of the imagination that shelter her from emotional abandonment.
