Abstract
This article analyzes the post-1945 attempt of the Portuguese New State and Francoism to define themselves as «organic democracies» and places it within the framework of the struggle to conceptualize democracy that took place in postwar Europe. By combining political and comparative history and resorting to discourses delivered by the main political authorities of both dictatorships between 1945 and 1957, the article provides the first account of the major characteristics of such a discourse and its connections with the discourses on democracy that the main European political actors developed during the postwar. In doing so, it provides a new perspective to assess both dictatorships integration process into the post-1945 International Community. Moreover, it nuances the account of the process of conceptualization of democracy in postwar Europe. Finally, it challenges the interpretative framework according to which both regimes became isolated and completely disconnected from European history after the Axis defeat.
