Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyze the beliefs and attitudes of the archbishops of Toledo concerning the concept of death in general and that of their own death in particular. We will examine the rare instances in which we find extant medieval records of inheritance and their wills (which is not to say many more did not exist originally). Following the analysis of the few existing records, we will attempt to outline the mentality prevalent not just in ecclesiastical circles, but also in society in general at the moment in which these individuals lived and died as powerful political magnates and the main prelates of the Hispanic kingdoms.
