La Ilustración Española y Americana (1869-1921) is the best example of a graphic Spanish newspaper from the second half of the nineteenth century. It was a broadsheet illustrated magazine that included current news in its sections. Institutional activities were among them. This news was complemented with high quality engravings which offered further meaning and details to the writing. The magazine became a privileged witness to King Alfonso XII’s public ceremonies of accession to power as well as those of his life. These ceremonies revealed the emotional bonds between the King and his citizens as well as guaranteed the continuity of the dynasty into the future. The ceremonies and their protocol were then actually visible to the readers of the magazine and in that way it expanded its presentation and enlightenment.
