Family therapy in schizophrenia

In this article the author reviews the development of schizophrenia, and highlights relevant criteria for its proper diagnosis. Continuing in this vein, the author discusses the medical model, enviromental factors and the role of stress in the exacerbation of the schizophrenic condition. The author also explores those therapies traditionally associated with the treatment of schizophrenia: systemic therapies, psychoeducational approaches, behavioral therapies, psychosocial approaches, and psychoanalysis. Finally, the similarities and differences among these diverse orientations are pointed out.
