Abstract

This article examines some of the main aspects that help to explain the type of bond that is developed when a person joins to a coercive cult. Some of the defining and distinctive elements of the frame of action of these cults or psychologically manipulative groups are revised. An especial attention is given to the process of involvement and a new classification of the strategies of coercive persuasion and psychological abuse, that characterizes the way of acting of such cultic groups, is included. The process by which the adept leaves the cult is also analyzed, as well as a thorough analysis of the role that family members frequently play in the different stages of the process is included, especially at the beginning and at the end, during the involvement and the abandonment.
