Abstract

Starting from a reflection about the personal and social meaning of anorexia, from a constructivist point of view, this study is aimed to inquire into the sense of anorexia nervosa; the deep meanings of self starvation. It is proposed that the understanding of the anorexics´ personal constructs systems, not only can show a particular experience of reality, but also enlighten how this specific construction brings forth a particular identity that gives a meaning to this symptom. In order to build an Anorexia Nervosa constructs map, the Kelly´s Repertory Grid Technique was used. These repgrids were statistically treated with particular software (Record 4.0) and analyzed from a qualitative methodology (Grounded Theory). The results show that there are relevant categories of their constructs, with inconsistencies between the way they relate with their social environment, their perception of the world that surrounds them, and their self-perception. An explanatory model is suggested.
