Abstract

This paper analyzes the main elements of transformation of European rural society as a result of the effects of agricultural modernization in the mid twentieth century. The principles that currently characterize the new rurality were built from. The central argument of this paper is to link the changes in rural society with macroeconomic and social context in which it is embedded, thus breaking with the traditional rural-urban dichotomy. In this sense the changes in social reality are also linked with scientific paradigms from which rurality were analyzed. The transformation of rural society has led to the development of Rural Studies, whose main bases are also discussed.
