Parental Mediation Scale for the Use of New Technologies: Adolescent version (PMSNT-a)

Objective: Parents seek ways to protect and support their children against the dangers of the internet. This study aims to develop and validate an instrument to assess parental mediation in technology use as perceived by adolescents. Method: A pool of 64 items was evaluated by 12 expert judges and 63 adolescents (59% female). The resulting scales were administered to 543 adolescents (55% females; Mage = 14.77) to analyze the version assessing maternal behaviors, and to 513 adolescents (54% females; Mage = 14.48) to analyze the version assessing paternal behaviors. Results: The exploratory (EFA) and confirmatory (CFA) factor analysis revealed a two-factor structure (active mediation and parental control), with satisfactory internal consistency (ω > .85). Differences in perceived mediation were found according to adolescents' age. Conclusions: The scale demonstrates adequate psychometric properties.
