La imagen del arquitecto en la Edad Media : historia de un ascenso

Resumen

El presente artículo se ocupa de la organización y condición laboral y social de los diferentes miembros del obrador medieval, y especialmente del arquitecto, a la luz de los términos utilizados por la documentación d8 la época y del testimonio que nos ofrecen las imágenes. De la imprecisión terminológica e iconográfica de los primeros tiempos, desde los siglos xii y xiii la especialización en el equipo constructivo parece mucho mayor. En su seno destaca la figura del arquitecto que, de representante de las artes mechanicae, pasa a convertirse en un trabajador intelectual, equiparable a uno de los miembros de las artes liberales.

By analyzing the language used ¡n contemporary documents and the visual evidence provided in available images, this article deals with the social and labor situation of the various members.in medieval workshops, focusing especially on the figure of the architect, as well as with their overall organization. We find a chronological development from the imprecise use of terminology and iconography found in the earliest period to a greater degree of especialization in building projects starting in the 12th and 13th centuries. The image of the architect begins to emerge and evolve from a practitioner of the artes mechanicae to an intellectual professional, comparable to those of the liberal arts.
