Abstract

The author analyses two complementary measures of intervention by public authorities in the wool market that were taken during the year 1699, with the purpose of supporting the interests of the Castilian cloth manufacturers. The first measure was the prohibition of the export of coarse wools, and it aimed to provide enough raw material to most of the cloth manufactures of the kingdom, that were specialized in the production of cheap cloths, that barely consumed fine wools. The second measure aimed to provide the cloth manufacture of the city of Segovia, that was specialized in the large-scale production of high quality cloths, with a sufficient quantity of fine wools at an affordable price, in order to alleviate the consequences of the sudden and strong increase in the prices of fine wool that took place in Castile in 1699.
