The episcopal election and appointment is one of the most important ceremonies for the Catholic Church since the beginning of Christianity. Why? Because of the importance of the bishop's figure for the local Christian community that he governs. From the first century to the present, its protocol has undergone very significant changes. The chronology of these adaptations revolves around four key events that explain the development and progress of this ceremony: III Council of Orleans (538), III Lateran Council (1179), Western Schism )1378-1417), Decree Christus Dominus (1965).
