EL TEATRO RELIGIOSO DEL SIGLO XX. UNA COMPARATIVA ENTRE LA PIEDRA DE T. S. ELIOT Y EL AUTO DEL HOMBRE DE JOSÉ LUIS ALONSO DE SANTOS

RELIGIOUS THEATRE OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY: A COMPARISON BETWEEN T. S. ELIOT’S THE ROCK AND JOSÉ LUIS ALONSO DE SANTOS’S EL AUTO DEL HOMBRE

Resumen

En este artículo se realiza una comparativa entre La piedra (1934), de T. S. Eliot y El auto del Hombre (1971), de José Luis Alonso de Santos, por tratarse de dos obras de tema religioso recientemente reeditadas que aúnan tradición y vanguardia al servicio del concepto de obra total y colectiva. Se analizan claves como el subgénero al que cada una pertenece; la cuestión de la autoría; el método compositivo del que parten; el objetivo que persiguen dentro del contexto social al que se refieren, así como la recepción que conocieron en sus respectivos estrenos. Con ello, se subrayan similitudes y divergencias en dos ejemplos singulares dentro de la trayectoria teatral de cada autor que, además, hasta no hace mucho habían recibido escasa atención crítica.

Abstract: In this article I compare The Rock (1934) by T. S. Eliot and El auto del Hombre (1971) by José Luis Alonso de Santos. Both plays, recently reedited, join tradition and avantgarde in the name of the total collective artwork. I analyze the subgenre to which each play belongs; the question of authorship; the compositional method; the goal these plays pursue within the social context in which they are embedded, as well as the reception they experienced in their premieres. This article centers on the existent similitudes and divergences in two singular plays that marked the theatrical trajectory of each author, and which have not received much critical attention until recent times.
