Abstract

A pilot study to evaluate a cognitive-behavioural program as indicated for the prevention of childhood depression was carried out. Taking part in this program, 25 pupils were randomly assigned to experimental group and waiting list group suffering depressive symptoms. With a mean age of 11,12 years, of both gender, and from a medium-high and high socioeconomic level. The building program of optimism was developed in twelve sessions of two hours. Its main components were updated explanatory style and problem solving skills. Within the experimental group, a statistically significant reduction in depressive symptoms has been produced, with an effect size of medium-low scale in line with the findings of conducted prevention reviews. The implications of these findings from the positive psychology perspective are discussed.
