Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to reflect on the work Trance and Memory
in Buddhism and Yoga by Raquel Ferrández Formoso, specifically on her contribution
to the role of memory and attention in the Buddhism of the first centuries and in the
Yogasūtra. In her book, the author shows how the two main traditions analyzed propose
the substitution of an implicit samsaric memory by another nirvanic liberating memory,
through forgetting home life and the consummation of the eternal-never-return. On
the other hand, she shows how the new mindfulness meditation methodologies separate
themselves from the old meditative conceptions, since they propose a pure attention that
is not related to liberating philosophies and their ethics, to favor a sensualism in the
present moment. Unlike the original Buddhism and the Yogasūtra that propose leaving
behind home life, mindfulness, focused on therapy, does not imply giving up the way
of life, or any profound philosophical change.
