This article seeks to clarify the philosophical problems that underlie the endogenous ambivalence of the ethics of self-realization, reviewing the debate raised by the moral ideal of «self-realization» as it is found in Dewey’s «Self-realization as the moral ideal» (1893), and Alfred Edward Taylor’s «Self-realization -a critique» (1896). After showing the philosophical inconsistencies around «self-realization», as described during the 19th century by both philosophers, the text proposes to find the traces of this moral ideal in our present time.
