This study, which is part of a more important work, presents the evaluation of the functional and cognitive change that takes place in the elderly people living in nursing homes in Almeria (Spain). In this longitudinal study, we administrated the Escala Multidimensional de Observación de la Autonomía Funcional de Ancianos en Residencias (EMOAFAR; Bernal, 2002) (Multidimensional Scale of Observation of the Functional Autonomy of Elderly People Living in Nursing Homes) and the Philadelphia Geriatric Centre Questionnaire (PGCQ; Fishback, 1977). 73 participants took part in the study, both men and women. Each one was evaluated four times within 32 months. We found differences related to their previous cognitive level. We tested the Maddox and Douglas' hypothesis (1974), about the heterogeneity of aging. The results show that it is necessary to improve the resources in nursing homes in order to promote psychological intervention programs that prevent and palliate functional and cognitive impairment.
