Abstract

The “zarzuelas” about the Peninsular War, as cultural expressions, show the dominant ideology in Spain during that time. With is project, based on librettos and on musical forms, we want to check what is transmited to society when the words “Homeland” and “Nation”. After presenting the theme of the Peninsular War in “zarzuela” and the importance of the relationship of this event with the idealization of 19th century spanish nationalism, we will study both words separately to show their meaning and how they are used. This way we will see that these words are used refering to Spain and they seen only to be slightly different by a sentimental nuance.
