Abstract

This study presents a new reading of chapter 29 of Pacatus Drepanius’ panegyric in honor of Theodosius I (389) dealing with the condemnation of the Priscillianists by the usurper Magnus Maximus (385), a topic that has received subsidiary attention in recent research. The chapter is part of the antityrannical invective to denigrate Magnus Maximus (383-388). Considering that Pacatus is selective in the matters he deals with, the singular incorporation into the series of victims of the usurper of the widow of a prominent poet celebrated by Ausonius, the retor Attius Tiro Delphidius, and other miseri denounced and accused by sacrilegious priests, requires an explanation, since they had been condemned as Manichaeans guilty of maleficium. It is suggested that the passage serves a deliberate function within Pacatus’ invective against Maximus, in order to destroy his reputed pietas and to represent him as a cruentus and impius persecutor of innocents for religious reasons. This was a stigmatized figure in martyrdom literature and the persecution narrative.
