Iconographic Considerations on the Divinization of the Emperor: Apotheosis and the «Mythological Portrait»

From Alexander the Great to our days, the iconic tradition of the West Art has recreated the glory of its rulers. The assimilation of the ruler with the divinity brought with it the process of deification after death for his memory and eternal glory. With these lines we propose an approach to the iconographic prototypes associated with the deification concepts of the Roman emperors (Apotheosis and mythological portraits), from their genesis to the imperial era.
