Manuel Chaves Nogales en defensa de Valle-Inclán: un discrepante para la República. Contexto y análisis del artículo “Don Ramón, «enchufista»”

Abstract

El presente trabajo no es sino un intento de definir y explicar las razones que llevaron al periodista Manuel Chaves Nogales a publicar el artículo “Don Ramón, «enchufista»”, en el que no sólo defendía la candidatura de Ramón del Valle-Inclán para la dirección de la Academia Española de Bellas Artes de Roma, sino que, fundamentalmente, reivindicaba la importancia de la figura del escritor gallego, independiente e iconoclasta, para una República que se quería democrática. Para tal fin, estudiaremos las circunstancias personales por las que atravesaba el escritor, la relación entre éste y el periodista sevillano, el momento histórico en que se publicó el artículo de Chaves y, finalmente, las posiciones que adoptaron uno y otro ante los grandes acontecimientos de su tiempo en base a sus respectivas ideas y temperamentos; de manera que también consigamos entender un poco mejor el carácter y el pensamiento de estos dos singulares personajes.

This work is an attempt to define and explain the reasons that prompted the journalist Manuel Chaves Nogales to publish the article «Don Ramón, “enchufista”», in which he not only defended the candidacy of Ramón del Valle-Inclán for the Direction of the Spanish Academy of Fine Arts of Rome, but also, and fundamentally, claimed the importance of the Galician writer’s independent and iconoclastic figure, for a Republic that wanted to be democratic. For that purpose, we will study the personal circumstances of the writer in that time, the relationship between him and the Sevillian journalist, the moment of History in which the article was published and finally, the positions they both took before the great events of their time according to their respective ideas and temperaments; so that we also come to better understand the character and the thinking of those two singular figures.
