CUBRIENDO EL CUERPO. VESTIMENTA Y GÉNERO EN LA POESÍA DE CONCHA MÉNDEZ

CLOTHING AND GENDER IN THE POETRY OF CONCHA MÉNDEZ

Resumen

Este estudio analiza una poética de la vestimenta en varias obras de Concha Méndez (1898-1986). En sus tres primeros libros, Inquietudes (1926), Surtidor (1929) y Canciones de mar y tierra (1930), la manipulación de la imaginería de la indumentaria potencia la expresión de la temática de género. El análisis se contextualiza con una síntesis de diferentes teorías sobre el lenguaje de la ropa y la relación histórica de las mujeres con la vestimenta. Méndez adscribe una significación lúdica y a la vez profunda a distintas categorías de ropa: los trajes de sueños, el bañador, los accesorios, la ropa deportiva de invierno y el uniforme. Por una parte, la poética de la vestimenta reivindica las prácticas femeninas tradicionales y, por otra, reformula el género imaginando mujeres como sujetos independientes con control de sus propios cuerpos y vidas.

Abstract: This study analyzes the poetics of clothing in works of Concha Méndez (1898-1986). In her first three books, Inquietudes (1926), Surtidor (1929), and Canciones de mar y tierra (1930), the manipulation of the imaginary of clothing strengthens the expression of the theme of gender. A synthesis of theories of clothing and of the historic relationship of women to clothes contextualizes the analysis. Méndez ascribes meaning, both lighthearted and profound, to different categories of clothing: dream dresses, bathing suits, accessories, winter sports wear, and the uniform. On the one hand, the poetics of clothing vindicates traditional female practices, and on the other, reformulates gender, imagining women as independent subjects in control of their own bodies and lives.
