Abstract

The use of free verse in the work of the social poet Blas de Otero (1916-1979) constitutes a capital moment in his production, given its capability to ensure a more common and colloquial expression once the poet abandons existentialism. However, after this formal and thematic change, the author starts a new poetic phase in which individualism and the inmensa mayoría –social aim– work together in order to represent reality –life– understood as a superior concept. With this purpose, the gradual liberation of his writing, which even helps Otero in creating prose, finds in free verse the final expression of his poetic. Although the author does not systematically achieve a genuine free verse in his whole practice, his final work (1968-1977) is benefited from its theoretical, practical, and expressive nature.
