El artículo repasa las diferentes fases en la investigación y transmisión de la cosmología sāmkhya. Desde sus primeras apariciones en la literatura antigua de India, que se remontan al periodo postvédico, hasta sus sistematización en el periodo clásico por parte de Īśvarakrsna en la Sāmkhyakārikā (finales del siglo IV), prestando una especial atención al comentario sánscrito medieval de Vācaspati Miśra titulado Tattvakaumudī (siglo X). Asimismo, se analizan las diferentes interpretaciones de esta tradición de pensamiento realizadas en India y Europa en el periodo 1896–1970 por Jhā, Dasgupta, Frauwallner y Larson.
