Abstract

The founding character attributed to freedom in Kant's philosophy raises the need to proceed to justify its reality. In the KpV, Kant undertakes a process of grounding morality starting from the existence of a Faktum der Vernunft consisting of the «conscience of the moral law». The immediacy of this consciousness establishes the Faktum as the supreme instance from which it becomes possible to justify the reality of morality. The feeling of respect to which the Faktum gives rise allows for its part the justification of the reality of freedom in the moral determination of human behavior (positive concept of freedom), being derived from it the possible independence with respect to the natural inclinations of the human will (negative concept). Morality thus constitutes the ratio cognoscendi of freedom, while freedom is the ratio essendi of morality.
