Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine the prevalence of alexithymia in a non-clinical sample of subjects with abnormal eating attitudes (EAT ≥ 20). Subjects (N = 220) completed the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) and the Eating Attitude Test (EAT-40). Results suggest that subjects (N = 39) with a tendency to suffer the eating pathology (EAT ≥ 20) showed higher scores on the alexithymia scale than the control group (N = 181); particularly, these subjects shown a higher score on the affective subscales of the TAS-20 (i.e., difficulty identifying feelings and difficulty describing feelings), but not on cognitive deficits of alexithymia.
