Abstract

El Sobrarbe, comarca del Pirineo oriental aragonés de gran tradición histórica, adolece de una completa documentación por lo que su pasado permanece envuelto en la oscuridad, efectando fundamentalmente esta parquedad informativa a la alta Edad Media. Parece ser que en la geogría visigoda no existía una «térra Suprarbensis», por cuanto el futuro condado fue segregado del territorio Barbotano —la Barbitaniya musulmana—. Sí se tiene constancia de la «térra Boletana» que, con la cabecera en Boltaña, comprendería los altos valles del río Cinca y limitaría ai sur con aquélla. (Duran Gudiol, A. 1988: 13). La posición abierta y vulnerable del territorio en su sector meridional dio pie a frecuentes incursiones musulmanas que se adentraron hasta Boltaña e incluso atravesaron las gargantas de Jánovas, irrumpiendo en la ribera de Fiscal.
