TWO DYSTOPIAS IN JUAN MAYORGA’S THEATRE: ZOMBIFICATION, APOCALYPSE AND CLONING IN ANGELUS NOVUS (2017) AND EL GOLEM (2022)

Resumen

En la segunda mitad del siglo XX ha habido un florecimiento del género de la ciencia ficción en España por las posibilidades que ofrece para el tratamiento político de la historia y de las tensiones entre pasado y presente. Juan Mayorga, cuya preocupación por la dicotomía memoria-progreso es una constante en su obra filosófica y teatral, construye en Angelus Novus (2017) y El Golem (2022): dos distopías político-capitalistas en las que la humanidad se encuentra sumida en la desesperación tras el colapso del sistema sanitario. La llegada de un ser no-humano que trasmite una epidemia que zombifica a los habitantes, y la resurrección por medio de la clonación de un líder político, pondrán en jaque a la clase política que deberá enfrentarse al apocalipsis provocado por la ciudadanía.

Abstract: In the second half of the 20th Century there has been a flourishing of the science fiction genre in Spain due to the possibilities it offers for the political treatment of history and the tensions between past and present. Juan Mayorga, whose concern for the dichotomy between memory and progress is a constant in his philosophical and theatrical work, constructs in Angelus Novus (2017) and El Golem (2022) two political-capitalist dystopias in which humanity is plunged into despair after the collapse of the health system. The arrival of a non-human being who transmits an epidemic that zombifies the inhabitants, and the resurrection through the cloning of a political leader, will put in check the political class that will have to face the apocalypse caused by the citizenry.
