THE PAST AS FUTURE: THE GENRE OF ABANDONED WONDERS

Resumen

El presente artículo pretende dar cuenta de una serie de obras que pueden englobarse bajo la etiqueta de maravillas abandonadas, todas ellas vinculadas con el género de la ciencia ficción. Si bien podrían dividirse estos textos en tres subtipos de relatos —artefactos, ruinas arquitectónicas y superestructuras—, tienen en común la existencia de una civilización extraterrestre que ha dejado algún tipo de construcción u objeto que provoca un efecto sublime a aquellos que interaccionan con ello. La manera en que cada una de las obras enfrenta la relación entre civilización perdida, humanidad y efecto sublime determina unas connotaciones diferentes. Por consiguiente, con el análisis estas obras se aporta también una metodología que pueda ser valiosa para el estudio y el disfrute de textos concretos.

Abstract: This article aims to give an account of a series of texts that can be grouped under the label of abandoned wonders, all of them linked to the genre of science fiction. While these texts could be divided into three sub-types of narratives —artefacts, architectural ruins and superstructures— they have in common the existence of an extraterrestrial civilization that has left behind some kind of construction or object that provokes a sublime effect on those who interact with it. The way in which each of the works deals with the relationship between lost civilization, humanity and sublime effect determines different connotations. Therefore, the analysis of these works also provides a methodology that can be valuable for the study and enjoyment of specific texts.
