VERSIFICATION AND THEATRICALITY IN FEDERICO GARCÍA LORCA’S EL PÚBLICO: THE SILLY SHEPHERD’S SONG

Resumen

El cuadro del Pastor Bobo cumple en El público una función coral y metadramática que está íntimamente relacionada con el empleo del verso y de la rima. Estos elementos rítmicos, en contraste con el uso generalizado de la prosa, han de ser considerados como signos dramáticos nucleares en el drama, ya que tienen un papel esencial en la teatralización del personaje y en su carácter metadramático, al tiempo que están al servicio de la creación de una red metafórica que se corresponde, semánticamente, con el problema de la identidad y sus metamorfosis y, estructuralmente, con la profusión de niveles dramáticos que ejemplifican la fragmentación del sujeto.

Abstract: The Silly Shepherd scene in El público has a choral and metadramatic function closely related to the use of verse and rhyme. In contrast to the generalized use of prose in the play, these rhythmic elements must be considered as nuclear dramatic signs, since they have an essential role in the theatricalization of the character and in its metadramatic condition. At the same time, they support the creation of a metaphorical network, semantically and structurally corresponding to the problem of identity and its metamorphoses and to the variety of dramatic levels which exemplifies the fragmented self.
