The “Homo faber” trilogy written by Richard Sennett between 2008
and 2018 should be understood as the paradigm of a non-revolutionary liberal neo-
Luddism, closer to the epistemological horizon of pre-Raphaelites like William Morris
than to the anarcho-primitivism of the most radical Neo-Luddites like Zerzan or
Kaczynski. Deeply influenced by the architectural ideology centered on craftsmanship
skill and (the design of ) the way as a means of ethical-political construction of the
city, Sennett’s proposal is completely obsolete and unable to meet the technological
challenge we are facing. This article explains the points of contact of his work with a
mythical vision of the pre-industrial society typical of the Neo-Luddites with a double
aim: to show the insufficiency and partiality of his proposal regarding the current social
implications of the technique, as well as to prove its deeply ideological and Westerncentric
character.
