Abstract

In high voltage overhead lines, the isolation level depends on climatol ogical and electrical parameters, such as the action of the wind over its components, air pollution a nd humidity, environmental temperature and pressure, etc. The goal of this work is to calculate the swing angle of the insulators chain due to the wind action, which is an important parameter on the study of the isolation level of high voltage overhead lines. Several theoretical methodologies were applied to calculate the swing angle and results are presented. An experimental methodology is also deve loped for the calculus and monitoring of the swing angle due to the wind action. A prototype sensor to monitoring the swing angle of the insulators chain was built and installed in the high voltage overhead line. In parall el, a commercial computational fluid dy namic (CFD) software was used to model the atmospheric boundary layer to obtain the wind field. It was also developed a computer code to determine the theoretical swing angle. Experimental data were used to implement the boundary conditions.
