Community as Gift:
(Im)possible Conversation between Nancy and Derrida

Based on the aporetics of donation posed by Derrida, it can be affirmed that the notion of community in Nancy —the being-with—, which manifests itself as a patency of the relation with others, would be crossed by a latency of donation, to which singular beings would be irretrievably destined. It is proposed that, in this exposure and appearance, in this existence outside of itself (ecstasy) that befalls singularity, and which is the very form in which Nancy thinks about the community, the occurrence of an “aneconomic” donation would always take place. This donation does not contemplate the possibility of restitution or a counter-gift, and, insofar as it does not appear as a gift either for the donor or for the donee, would be an impossible donation but nevertheless would always be happening.
