Abstract

The following pages deal with the humanist proposal for a new Enlightenment (Aufklärung)  by José Ortega y Gasset (1883-1955) in Misión de la Universidad (1930), a work in which the philosopher emphasizes the value of a culture of humanities or general culture that, as a system of ideas about the world and humanity, were promoted by medieval universities and that it is necessary to recover, to counteract the barbarism of specialism or the terrorism of the laboratories that invades the university.

In a global world that increasingly demands greater attention to interdisciplinarity to better understand the issues that concern us most and that are none other than the fully human, the university plays a fundamental role, having to promote the study of the humanities because, as says Ortega, the splendid word humanities designates all disciplines that deal with the set of exclusively human facts.
