Abstract

The aim of this paper is to reconstruct Carl Schmitt’s analyses of the structure of the philosophical first Modernity, in order to underline the continuity between his political reflection and his thinking about history. Thus, the idea of conflict (including the idea of theoretical conflict) is essential for understanding Schmitt’s philosophy of history, and it clearly appears in his analyses of Descartes’ and Spinoza’s ideas.
