Abstract

People diagnosed with severe mental illness, upon reaching old age, face the changes inherent to aging, which are compounded by those derived from their illness. This study analyzes the testimonies of professionals in psychosocial rehabilitation facilities regarding active aging and socio-educational intervention for older adults with severe mental illness. The opportunities and challenges for improving access to activities that promote active aging in this group were explored. The study used an open-ended questionnaire to gather the assessments of 21 professionals from the Mental Health Network of the Community of Madrid.

MAXQDA qualitative analysis software was used for result analysis. The results highlighted the needs of people with severe mental illness during aging. Regarding the responses of the professionals related to active aging, it was found that most participants are aligned with this approach. The study concludes that there is a need to propose individualized socio-educational interventions aimed at improving the quality of care provided to these individuals.
