Since the first regulations on the railway transport common policy appeard, in the IV Title of the Roma Treaty, and after multiple modifications and additions of several regulations and direetives, it is not until the Maastrich Treaty wben the liberalisation of the railway transport sector is finally regulated. It had an important impact on the increase of the infraestructure safety of this transport system. This increase in safety normally requires the use of an a adequate and efficient maintenance system. specially in its critic elements. The authors have carried out their research work in turnouts, mainly because they are one of the most important critic elements of the railway infrastructure, from the safety poínt of view. They have designed and implemented satisfactorily a Remote Condition Monitoring, (RCM) in points mechanisms. RCM is understood as the measurement of a critical physical variable representative of the macbine condition, and its comparison with sorne representative value of the mechanism state. The present paper shows the most relevant results of the mentioned research work carried out by Castilla.La Mancha (Spain) and Sheffield (UK) Universities.
