Abstract

From the outlawing the slave trade in 1820 and officially most reliable way from 1835, the pressures of abolitionist countries, especially England, became increasingly difficult entry into Cuba of new slaves from Africa. Soon it became necessary to replace the slave labor in other ways. Of all the actions on the import of labor hired to replace slavery, the most successful case and therefore also the greatest number of people contributed, was undoubtedly the Asian settlers. They also cite the unique project of Urban Feijóo to replace slaves by Galician settlers and attempts to substitute for Indians from the Yucatan (by agreement with the Mexican government). In the same line are attempts to bring Europeans, especially Germans and Irish.
