Abstract

This article studies and analyzes the Insigne Orden del Toisón de Oro as an element of power for kings and princes in the patrimonial and cultural legacy of the Imperial City of Toledo. A city that became the seat of the court and government of the Empire of Charles I where the ceremonial and Burgundian etiquette were the key elements of the representation of Majesty. These symbols are observed both in the Heraldic of the Habsburgs represented in the notable buildings of the city of Toledo, as well as in their use in the different arts as an element of power, and among them it is necessary to highlight those representing the Order of the Golden Fleece. On the other hand, certain artistic representations in which an erroneous use of this Order of Chivalry is made are valued.

Our main objective is to achieve through the study and analysis of these representations to examine the Insigne Orden del Toisón de Oro as an element of power of kings and princes in the patrimonial and cultural legacy of the Imperial City of Toledo.

As detailed later in the hypothesis, the greatest symbol of ostentation of power at the time is the Golden Fleece and the emperor uses this heraldic symbol as a language of authority. In this way, it is intentionally sought to provide Toledo with a special category as the capital of the empire and at the same time to manifest the propagandist image that the crown projects in society through the Heraldic of the Habsburgs in the notable buildings of the city.
