Claudio Rodríguez y el don de la traducción
Abstract
Little is known about poet Claudio Rodríguez’s activity as a poetry translator. This circumstance is understandable since most of his translations from English into Spanish remain unfinished and unpublished to this day. However, Rodríguez’s acknowledged interest for Anglo- American poetry found its use in a commission that he received in 1966 for the translation of all of T. S. Eliot’s poetic oeuvre (except the Four Quartets). These two circumstances have proved relevant enough for critics to highlight the imprint of English poetry in the poet from Zamora.
This article traces the historical and literary context of Claudio Rodríguez as a translator while it suggests a methodological approach for a possible critical edition of his translations that should respectfully consider their condition of unfinished texts. Both steps aim to contribute to a broader assessment of the literary figure of Claudio Rodríguez, insofar as the poet’s compositional method and influences may find their reflection in the translations and vice versa.
