Abstract

This paper studies what type of end (τέλος) happiness (εὐδαιμονία) is for Aristotle because, in his Ethics, it sometimes identified identified with several ends and, other times, with only one. This is the old debate between the defenders of the inclusive end and the dominant end. For Aristotle, the end responds to the nature or the function for which each thing is made. If the function of man is a life according to reason, the end of happiness must be contemplation. For this reason, only man and higher beings can be called happy because they are the only ones who enjoy this faculty.
