Abstract

Thermal treatments are processes used to modify mechanical properties in materials. Quenching is one of the most frequently used in steels to increase hardness and mechanical resistance. The mathematical modelling of steel quenching processes gives place to its numerical analys is. The numerical formulation of quenching, under certain conditions, in a steel piece enables the distribution of temperatures at every point of the piece. For that purpose, the singularities of the problem are analysed using the model ?s non-linearity..The determination of temperature profiles is the first step to obtain the cooling velocities at the piece ?s points. These may be used to determine the steel ?s level of hardness.
