Abstract

Centrifugal slurry pumps have highly abrasion resistant internal lining. These parts life and reliability are critical parameters for the plant´s Operational Expenditures and operational efficiency, since unscheduled breakdown drastically reduces production. This paper investigates a series of suction lining unexpected breakdowns after increasing a 10”x8”ST Warman Pump speed. A bearing-rotor computational model was built in XLRotor software in order to analyze it´s rotor dynamic behavior and to investigate a possible “Tip-rub” phenomenon. XLRotor software utilizes either Matrix Transfer or Finite Element Methods, depending on the system complexity. Comparing computational results with damage found in faulty parts show that the damage likely occurred due to impeller swing and proximity to the suction lining. Recommendations regarding impeller positioning and lining material selection are made for this application.
