Resumen

Due to the advantages of gas lubrication, it has been increasingly sought to improve the use of gas bearings lubricated by compressible fluids such as air. The obstacles to the usage of these components, imposed mainly by instability problems, have been faced in different ways. Non-cylindrical bearings of fixed geometry are the alternative with lowest cost between them. Thus, it is essential to know how the various parameters that characterize these components influence their performance. This way, a finite element procedure is validated and applied in order to analyze the effect of the preload factor on the performance characteristics of three-lobe bearings, one of the most promising representatives of those components. Stationary and dynamic performance characteristics are evaluated. The procedure relies on the application of the perturbation method in the classical Reynolds equation to obtain the zero order and first order lubrication equations. The finite element equations are determined using the Galerkin weighted residual method with high order interpolation functions. From the solution of the zero order equation, the hydrodynamic pressures and other stationary performance characteristics are determined. The dynamic performance characteristics are obtained through the solution of the first order equation using the pressure distribution of the static solution
