In this article, we will provide a detailed explanation of the theoretical and procedural principles for conducting a cluster analysis in medieval historical studies using the Gower's distance method. Cluster analysis is a commonly used tool in archaeology to classify materials found at sites, but these statistical methods can also be applied to understand exploitation and occupation strategies of a specific territory. Gower's distance is a non-parametric test that is particularly useful to know how different are the records of a mixed data set. Using a combination of documentary and cartographic sources, we will present the results of a cluster analysis to define farming and forestry strategies in a set of medieval settlements in the Baix Montseny region of Catalonia, existing during the 11th century.
