How Students Perceive the Learning of English as an International Language: A Theoretical and Practical Approach

Abstract

English is no longer the language belonging to about 375 million native English speakers. It is also an international language spoken by more than a billion of second and foreign language users. The models used to teach English as a second or foreign language have traditionally been mainly native speaker models. However, in the last few years, a large number of researchers have suggested integrating a model of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) into the English classroom because it has several benefits for international communication, since international intelligibility is now the main goal. In this work, a research study has been carried out to analyze how Spanish students of English (B2 level) value some of the main tenets of the ELF model, such as the importance of confidence, intelligibility and the dichotomy native vs. non-native accent while speaking the foreign language.

Pilar Hernández Martínez , Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED)

Pilar Hernández Martínez is a PhD student at UNED (Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia), where she is studying a Doctoral Program in Philology: Linguistics and Literary Studies. She has also been teaching English at the EOI (Official School of Languages) in the Region of Murcia since 2007. She worked at the Faculty of English Philology, University of Murcia, as an associate lecturer from September 2016 to July 2017. It was at this university where she studied a degree in English Language some years before. In 2006 she completed a Master’s Degree in English Applied Linguistics at UNED, which focused on the linguistic policies of the English language in Europe. As a result, she wrote a Master's thesis which was published in e-spacio, UNED, in June 2016. 

Dra. María Beatriz Pérez Cabello del Alba , Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia

Dr María Beatriz Pérez Cabello de Alba is Associate Professor of English Language and Linguistics at the UNED (Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia) where she teaches Linguistics and English for Specific Purposes (ESP). She also teaches several courses in the UNED European Masters of English Applied Linguistics. Her research interests cover the semantic conceptual interface of language, natural language processing and clinical linguistics. She has been visiting scholar at the Universities of Amsterdam and Verona. She has also been visiting professor at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, associate professor at Kingston University and assistant professor at the London School of Economics and Political Science.
