From time immemorial, precedence was based on the recognition of power between territories. Thus, changes in power status and diplomatic rules caused frequent diplomatic problems. From 1815, the Congress of Vienna established preference to foreign agents according to the official date of arrival at their destination. On the occasion of the bicentennial of the Congress of Vienna, this article analyses the evolution of precedence and some of the related Spanish diplomatic historic disputes.
