Abstract

The first level of articulation between experience and language is the biography, the narration of the most relevant moments of one’s life. On a higher level, historical science could be regarded as the narration of collective experience. This paper seeks to clarify these two levels of articulation and interpretation of the lives of individuals and communities in Dilthey and Collingwood. From a different conception of language, they present alternative and complementary ways of viewing the role of philosophical biography in the construction of the Science of History.
