Abstract

The pneumatic conveying of grains is widely known. In the particular case of "air drill" seeders, hoses are used to transport seeds and / or fertilizer from the storage hopper to the distributor, and finally to sowing units. A typical problem in this type of conveyors is the accumulation of seeds in troubled sectors of the system, eg in direction changes or sudden changes in pipe section (reduction or increase). In this work, trajectories of the seeds in a horizontal duct, and the influence of the forces acting on them, are analyzed using numerical simulation. The fluid is modeled by Navier Stokes equations, using a solving technique of Reynolds Average Navier-Stokes standard (RANS), with the turbulence model k-ε. The particles studied are soybeans, which are
considered as rigid spheres of uniform size. The particle-air mixture is considered as a dilute phase flow, using a weak coupling between both phases. A Lagrangian approach is applied to the particles, while fluid is treated with an Eulerian approach.
