Abstract

This article deals with the philosophy of historical reality of the philosopher and theologian Ignacio Ellacuría, possibly Xavier Zubiri’s closest disciple and collaborator. Our aim is to address the critical scope of Ellacuría’s philosophy, which is reflected above all in an unfinished book and in his articles written in the 1970s and 1980s. To this end, we will discuss four questions relevant to our subject: whether this is a philosophy of progress, whether it provides convincing normative criteria for socio-political critique, whether it is a pure philosophy (as was the case of Zubiri) and whether its vanishing point is theological. All this will allow us to assess the coherence of Ellacuría’s philosophy and its possible relevance today.
